Suspiria:
Alternative Movie Poster

This poster is an alternative movie poster for the 1977 Dario Argento film Suspiria. I began my research on this project by rewatching the films and conducting a deep dive into its history. I then created a series of mind maps and a mood board for the mood of the film and another for my artistic direction.

I have enjoyed this film for a long time and frequently, lovingly described it as a movie about wallpaper due to its amazing set and lighting design. The atmosphere outweighs the plot and makes for gorgeous, candy-colored horror.

Dario Argento once said that the colors of the film were based on Disney’s Snow White. He set out to create a dark fairytale of sorts using this saturated palette as its guiding light. He was also heavily influenced by M.C. Escher as seen in the film’s architectural and pattern designs.

I set out to create this alternative poster with those dark fairytale elements in mind that would appeal to the newcomer and longtime fan alike by piecing together an Escher-style pattern using imagery that represented the climax of the film – the red witch’s hand, blue iris, and green and black peacock plume stiletto.
